Overview

On a mission to “touch the Sun,” NASA's Parker Solar Probe became the first spacecraft to fly through the corona — the Sun’s upper atmosphere — passing within 3.8 million miles of the solar surface during its closest approaches. Parker Solar Probe flies through the corona at speeds up to 430,000 mph taking measurements to help scientists better understand the fundamental drivers of solar activity and space weather events that can impact life on Earth. Facing brutal heat and radiation conditions, Parker Solar Probe employs four instrument suites designed to study electric and magnetic fields, plasma, waves and energetic particles, as well as image the solar wind, the constant stream of material released by the Sun.

Parker Solar Probe launched on Aug. 12, 2018, from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.
