OCO-2 & Keeling Curve: Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide

This animation graphs the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in Earth’s atmosphere using measurements taken from the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) satellite (blue) and Keeling Curve data at Mauna Loa Observatory (red).

The animation starts by comparing monthly atmospheric CO2 concentration data collected by the Mauna Loa Observatory and the OCO-2 satellite from 2015 (not long after OCO-2’s launch in 2014). Once the data reaches March 2023, the Keeling Curve begins to move backward in time, showing monthly average CO2 concentration for every year since 1960, providing a grand overarching visual representation of how levels of CO2 have been building up in the atmosphere, driving an increase in global temperatures.
