Overview

Launched in 1977, the twin Voyager spacecraft are NASA’s longest operating and most distant spacecraft. Hurtling through space at over 38,000 miles per hour, Voyager 1 and 2 were the first confirmed human-made objects to cross the threshold into interstellar space. After completing an in-depth reconnaissance of the outer planets, the Voyager spacecraft departed the heliosphere, the protective bubble of particles and magnetic fields generated by the Sun, in two separate directions and are now exploring the edges of interstellar space.
