WEBVTT FILE 1 00:00:00.001 --> 00:00:13.740 "Hubble Women Making History" 2 00:00:13.740 --> 00:00:19.320 Hi my name is Beverly Johnson and I am the  Hubble Space Telescope payload team manager.   3 00:00:19.320 --> 00:00:26.940 We support any flight software updates and any  issues with the set of science instruments that   4 00:00:26.940 --> 00:00:33.420 are on board the Hubble Space Telescope. Each  science instrument has its own microprocessor   5 00:00:33.420 --> 00:00:40.440 and each one has code that runs in them. If there  are any issues in the performance of the science   6 00:00:40.440 --> 00:00:50.520 instruments on board then another big part of our  job is to get going an anomaly investigation which   7 00:00:50.520 --> 00:00:57.900 can be quite interesting. Hubble has probably been  the biggest learning platform for anomalies, we   8 00:00:57.900 --> 00:01:05.280 review and analyze the events of the anomaly and  all the data, come up with resolutions to correct   9 00:01:05.280 --> 00:01:12.360 whatever happened and we're up and running again.  The importance of maintaining the flight software   10 00:01:12.360 --> 00:01:19.800 and the science instrument systems onboard Hubble  is that that's basically, you know, how Hubble   11 00:01:19.800 --> 00:01:28.500 works to collect you know the science images  and data that the astronomers need. So our our   12 00:01:28.500 --> 00:01:35.400 job is to make sure everything is functioning. I  have actually been working on Hubble for 35 years   13 00:01:35.400 --> 00:01:42.720 this year, I myself can't even believe that, and I  never in my wildest dreams would have thought that   14 00:01:42.720 --> 00:01:49.440 was possible to be there one place so long, but  we have a lot of team members on Hubble that have   15 00:01:49.440 --> 00:01:57.120 been here for years simply because Hubble keeps  going and producing wonderful science it's just   16 00:01:57.120 --> 00:02:04.080 given us the opportunity to continue to support  it. As a woman on Hubble I feel very supported,   17 00:02:04.080 --> 00:02:10.200 it makes a big difference that I'm working with  other very strong leadership type of women as   18 00:02:10.200 --> 00:02:17.400 well, I think as you get more and more experience  on a job you get a little more respect and you you   19 00:02:17.400 --> 00:02:23.040 find that people hear you better. It is a little  bit of a challenge at first when you know you're   20 00:02:23.040 --> 00:02:29.820 new to a job and you just have to keep with it.  The advice I'd give to someone young trying to   21 00:02:29.820 --> 00:02:36.600 get into a science career of any sort is just  go with what you're good at if it's relatable,   22 00:02:36.600 --> 00:02:44.100 because I think you need that basic talent or just  skill and then you can build off of it from there. 23 00:02:44.100 --> 00:02:48.735 Follow us on social media @NASAHubble
