GEOS-5 GEOS-Chem Surface Ozone

Ozone (O₃) is an important component in the chemical cycles of pollutants in the lower troposphere. This simulation of global surface ozone was produced by the GEOS-5 GEOS-Chem Nature Run. The concentrations were calculated by the GEOS-Chem chemical mechanism from Harvard University, which was recently integrated into the GEOS-5 general circulation model (GCM) in cooperation with the GMAO.

The run was performed on a 12.5 km cubed-sphere grid for a year of simulated time, with the GCM constrained by analyzed meteorology. This is the first time a global chemical transport model of GEOS-Chem's complexity, with 93 transported constituents, has been run at such high resolution. This animation covers July 5-14, 2013 and includes Typhoon Soulik in the Western Pacific. This animation highlights the vigour of mixing and transport that is revealed by fine-scale simulation.
