Meet Our Solar System Our solar system includes the Sun, eight planets, five known dwarf planets, hundreds of moons, and thousands of asteroids and comets. In this visualization, all eight planets in our solar system are represented on their true planetary axis tilt. Pluto — once recognized as the ninth planet — was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006 by the International Astronomical Union due to its orbital proximity to similar objects deeper in the Kuiper Belt, a field of icy bodies that extends far beyond Neptune’s orbit.
