Viz4Climate 2022 - Call for Participation

CALLING ALL CLIMATE VISUALIZERS!

Submit your work to the half-day hybrid workshop titled “High-Impact Techniques for Visual Climate Science Communication” at IEEEVis 2022 in Oklahoma City, (USA)!

Overview

The workshop welcomes participants interested in visual climate science communication and submissions to be featured during the EnLightening Session of the workshop. The goal is to show the work of researchers and practitioners, who use climate data to inform and communicate. The Enlightening session is a series of selected presentations from practitioners and researchers, where presenters will share with workshop attendees the story behind the study or data visualization they created and explain how and why it aligns with the theme of the workshop. With 3 minutes for each presentation, the fast-paced session aims to bring to the surface and highlight work that addresses the theme of the workshop.

We invite practitioners, researchers, data journalists and visualization enthusiasts, to submit a 1-page write-up (.pdf) together with a short video clip (mp4) and a weblink (optional) that shows off a data-driven visualization or a visualization study that addresses the theme of the workshop. This includes but is not limited to data encoding, distribution, and dissemination of visualization products, but also user perceptions and adoption of, engagement and interactions with, and comprehension, trust, and reception of climate science.

The workshop embraces data-driven visualizations (e.g., 2D, 3D, animations, interactives, and applications) that are scientifically accurate. The technical scope of the workshop includes:

Write Up (required)

The write-up should explain what/why/how the submitter created the visualization, should describe outcomes and responses (both expected and unexpected) and list data sources. The one-page write-up must be in PDF format and conform to the two-column IEEE TVCG Conference Style Template.

Video (required)

In addition, you will need to upload a video presentation. The video presentation should include a narration that explains the work. The video can be the work itself, a demo of the work or a description of a study, etc. The submissions will be mostly evaluated on the abstract and the video. The video will serve as the presentation format during the conference. For this reason submitters are highly encouraged to prepare the video as a final presentation piece. The format must be .mp4 (.h264 encoding), 1920x1080, up to 3 minutes, with a narration describing the work. Please remember this is a presentation format and will be used to judge your work and it will also serve as your presentation during the EnLightening Session. For more information on preparing a video presentation with accessibility in mind, please visit the IEEE Vis Technical Information on Recording your Talk.

FAQ

You can get involved and join our community by:

  • Submitting your work to Viz4Climate. Accepted submissions will be presented at the workshop.
  • And/or signing up for the workshop and participating (in person or virtually) during the conference.

For virtual participants we will be using Discord and Miro during the conference.

Log in to PCS. Under Submissions:

  1. Make a new submission to Society: VGTC
  2. Conference/Journal: Vis 2022
  3. Select Track: Viz4Climate and then click on Go.

In the event you do not have an account in PCS, you will need to create one.

Submissions will be peer-reviewed by a jury team following ethics guidelines.

Each submission will be mostly judged on the following materials:

  • The one-page write up (.pdf) that conforms with the the two-column IEEE TVCG Conference Style Template
  • Up to 3 mins narrated video (format .mp4, .h264 encoding, 1920x1080). The video can be the work itself, a demo of the work or a description of a study, etc. Please remember this is a presentation format and will be used to judge your work and it will also serve as your presentation during the EnLightening Session.

Notifications will be sent on August 10, 2022.

If accepted you will be able to update any final materials so that they can be included in the workshop schedule, website and conference proceedings. This information needs to be finalized by August 20, 2022.
