Blackwater: SeaWiFS False Color (Chlorophyll)

Scientists are baffled by a mysterious 'dead zone' in the Gulf of Mexico off southern Florida, an area normally rife with fish but described by fishermen now as fouled by murky waters and barren of marine life.

Researchers speculate the black water, as local fishermen have dubbed it, may be a result of an algae bloom, not unlike red tide outbreaks that afflict the Suncoast region. This is a false color visualization showing chlorophyll.
