These eventually combined into the August  Complex fire, the first recorded gigafire in California history, which burned until November 12 consuming 1,614 square miles (4,180 square kilometers). As the lightning fades, a series of images shows the smoke emanating from the fires on September 8 of that year. And on June 25th, the fourth and final installation of the GOES-R series is set to launch from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. As the final satellite in NOAA’s GOES-R (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites) series, GOES-U will continue to provide fast, clear and reliable  weather-tracking information. GOES-U will provide real-time data for monitoring severe weather, hurricanes, wildfires, floods, fog and even lightning. Not only that, GOES-U carries a suite of instruments, including the first operational compact coronagraph, to monitor the Sun and warn us of approaching space weather hazards. A coronagraph is an instrument that blocks out the bright disk of the Sun so that researchers can see our star’s fainter outer atmosphere where much of the solar activity originates. This new coronagraph will better detect and characterize coronal mass ejections. The GOES series of weather satellites are parked in a geostationary orbit at points over the equator and rotate at the same speed as the Earth. The fixed location provides continuous coverage of weather conditions across the Western hemisphere. Once in orbit GOES-U will be renamed GOES-19. After an on-orbit check out to ensure its instruments and systems are working properly, GOES-19 will go into service as GOES-East, replacing GOES-16. Although Surigae didn't make landfall, it left heavy rainfall accumulations in its path, including over Palau, which IMERG estimated received over 300 millimeters (12 inches) of rainfall during the period of the animation. Local rain gauges showed similar accumulations during the same period of time.NASA's IMERG product is a multi-satellite global estimate of rainfall produced in near real-time at half-hourly intervals. The global span of IMERG covers the oceans as well as land areas, which is a major advantage over ground-based radar and rain gauge measurements. IMERG allows atmospheric scientists to study extreme weather events, such as typhoons, and better understand the mechanisms that drive them, leading to better preparedness for future events. || ",

Six research flights studying sea ice were based in Thule, Greenland, while ten that focused on land ice flew out of Kangerlussuaq in southern Greenland.For the survey, the crew utilized National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s P-3 Orion Hurricane Hunter plane. NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia provided the laser altimeter and one of the infrared cameras on the P-3. IceBridge's three radar instruments came from the Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets at the University of Kansas, while NASA's Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, California, provided the Digital Mapping System, and the University of Colorado loaned the second infrared camera.During this campaign the IceBridge aircraft flew under the path of Sentinel-3A, a recently launched ESA satellite that carries a radar altimeter that gauges sea ice thickness. Scientists will compare the Sentinel-3A measurements to the data IceBridge collected over the same spots with its radar and laser altimeters.             "description": "Hurricane Maria transformed the lush rainforests of Puerto Rico leaving lots of openings in the forest canopy. NASA scientists studied the island's forests before and after the storm. Goddard's Lidar, Hyperspectral, and Thermal Imager (G-LiHT) is a portable instrument that maps forest health and structure from a small airplane resulting in detailed 3-D views of the forest. G-LiHT sends out 600,000 laser pulses every second mapping leaves and branches, rocks and streams. Almost 60% of the canopy trees lost branches, snapped in half, or were uprooted. Trees with wide, spreading crowns were reduced to a slender main trunk. Forests in Puerto Rico are now one-third shorter on average, after Hurricane Maria. The disturbances affected the whole ecosystem, from soils and streams to birds and frogs.
