            "description": "Volcanic, tectonic, erosional and sedimentary landforms are all evident in this elevation model image of a region along the East African Rift at Lake Kivu. The area shown covers parts of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda.Lake Kivu, in the lower left of the image, lies within the East African Rift, an elongated tectonic pull-apart depression in Earth's crust. The rift extends to the northeast as a smooth lava- and sediment-filled trough. Two volcanic complexes are seen in the rift. The one closer to the lake is the Nyiragongo volcano, which erupted in January 2002, sending lava toward the lake shore and through the city of Goma. East of the rift, even more volcanoes are seen. These are the Virunga volcano chain, which is the home of the endangered mountain gorillas. Note that the terrain surrounding the volcanoes is much smoother than the eroding mountains that cover most of this view, such that topography alone is a good indicator of the extent of the lava flows.Elevation data used in this image was acquired by the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour, launched on Feb. 11, 2000. The mission used the same radar instrument that comprised the Spaceborne Imaging Radar-C/X-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SIR-C/X-SAR) that flew twice on Endeavour in 1994. || ",

The SSHA displayed in the animation is derived from along-track high-pass-filtered SWOT SSH data, which effectively removes long-wavelength errors and large-scale ocean signals. SWOT provides detailed measurements of water elevations across various global water bodies, including open and coastal oceans, rivers, and lakes, making it a true global all-water mission. The data gathered will enhance our understanding of small-scale ocean circulations, the ocean's role in Earth's climate, global hydrological circle, and freshwater management worldwide. || swot_oceans-rivers_00000_print.jpg (1024x576) [147.5 KB] || swot_oceans-rivers_00000.png (3840x2160) [3.8 MB] || swot_oceans-rivers_00000_searchweb.png (320x180) [53.8 KB] || swot_oceans-rivers_00000_thm.png (80x40) [4.3 KB] || swot_2024-06-06-A-HD.mp4 (1920x1080) [65.7 MB] || swot_2024-06-06-A-HD.webm (1920x1080) [14.3 MB] || swot_2024-06-06-A-4K.mp4 (3840x2160) [65.8 MB] || ",

            "description": "Atmospheric gravity waves are similar to what happens when you drop a stone into a calm pond, but they roll through the air and cloud tops instead of water. Just like waves form in the ocean or a lake when water is disturbed, waves also form in the atmosphere when air is disturbed. They form when air is forced upward by hills or mountains into a layer of stable air in the atmosphere. Gravity causes the air to fall back down, and it begins to oscillate, creating a ripple effect. Wind flowing over the Rocky Mountains, for example, can create gravity waves that are felt as turbulence on an airplane. || ",

            "title": "Methane Emissions from Wetlands",
            "description": "Complete transcript available.Methane is an important greenhouse gas that contributes substantially to global warming. On a molecule by molecule basis, methane is much more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, the main driver of warming. Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands. Wetland habitats are filled with things like waterlogged soils and permafrost, which makes them sizable carbon sinks. However, as the climate changes, these carbon-rich soils are vulnerable to flooding and to rising temperatures, which can release more carbon to the atmosphere in the form of methane. Understanding methane emissions from natural sources like wetlands is critically important to scientists and policymakers who are working to ensure that changes in natural systems don’t counteract progress in combatting climate change made by reducing emissions from human activities.This animation shows estimates of wetland methane emissions produced by the Lund–Potsdam–Jena Dynamic Global Vegetation Model (LPJ-DGVM) Wald Schnee und Landscaft version (LPJ-wsl). LPJ-wsl is a prognostic model, meaning that it can be used to simulate future changes in wetland emissions and independently verified with remote sensing data products. The model includes a complex, topography dependent model of near surface hydrology, and a permafrost and dynamic snow model, allowing it to produce realistic distributions of inundated areas. Highlighted areas show concentrated methane sources from tropical and high latitude ecosystems. The LPJ-wsl model is regularly used in conjunction with NASA’s GEOS model to simulate the impact of wetlands and other methane sources on atmospheric methane concentrations, compare against satellite and airborne data, and to improve understanding and prediction of wetland emissions. As the camera moves closer, data representing the surface height change pre-post TAG fades on. The surface height change as a result of the TAG event is represented by both a color map and by offsetting the original DTM to reveal the TAG crater. The DTM offset is applied to the surface region within ~7.5 meters of impact, which is highlighted for emphasis. With this color bar, yellows, greens, and blues represent a decrease in elevation, light red represents no change in elevation, and dark red represents an increase in elevation. Thruster marks and a region of ejected surface material are labeled. "title": "Go Now! Landsat & the Calypso Caper",
            "description": "During the summer of 1975, Jacques Cousteau and his divers helped NASA determine if Landsat could measure the depth of shallow ocean waters. The story of this NASA-led satellite bathymetry experiment unfolds through the photography and expedition documents preserved by David Lychenheim, the expedition’s communications engineer. Research done during that expedition determined that in certain conditions Landsat could measure depths up to 22 meters (72 feet), which gave birth to the field of satellite-derived bathymetry. This new technology enabled charts in clear water areas around the world to be revised, helping boats and deep-drafted supertankers avoid running aground on hazardous shoals or seamounts.Music: “Science of Life,” “Moving In Thought,” and “The Right Move” by Andrew Michael Britton [PRS] & David Stephen Goldsmith [PRS], “Midsummer” by Uwe Buschkotter [GEMA], “The Grand Opening” by Laurent Dury [SACEM], “Drifting Satellite” by Théo Boulenger [SACEM], “Man and Machine” by Larry Groupe [BMI], “A Little Optimism 1” by Joel Goodman [ASCAP], “Easy Does It” by Alchemist [SIAE], “Variations” by Stephan Sechi [ASCAP], “Bright and Playful” by Oscar Lo Brutto [PRS]; via Universal Production MusicComplete transcript available.Watch this video on the NASA Goddard YouTube channel. || 13907_Landsat_Cousteau_poster.png (1920x1080) [3.1 MB] || 13907_Landsat_Cousteau_poster_print.jpg (1024x576) [287.2 KB] || 13907_Landsat_Cousteau_poster_searchweb.png (320x180) [114.6 KB] || 13907_Landsat_Cousteau_poster_thm.png (80x40) [8.1 KB] || 13907_Landsat_Cousteau-pr.mov (1920x1080) [7.2 GB] || 13907_Landsat_Cousteau-yt.mp4 (1920x1080) [938.3 MB] || 13907_Landsat_Cousteau-tw.mp4 (1280x720) [301.1 MB] || 13907_Landsat_Cousteau-tw.webm (1280x720) [59.6 MB] || 13907_Landsat_Cousteau-captions.en_US.srt [11.3 KB] || 13907_Landsat_Cousteau-captions.en_US.vtt [10.8 KB] || ",

            "description": "Data visualization featuring internal tides data from NASA Goddard's Space Flight Center simulation run. The visualization sequence starts with a view of the Americas and the Pacific Ocean and soon after exposes the undersea mountain range along the Hawaiian Ridge. Internal tides data appear on the water surface and the direction of the waves reveal the interplay between the steep bathymetry and the tidal energy generated in the region. Zooming out to a global view, we spot other areas around the globe where large tides are generated, such as Tahiti, Southwest Indian Ocean and Luzon Strait and observe the motions and patterns presented by data. || InternalTides_1024x576_2944.jpg (1024x576) [614.4 KB] || InternalTides_1024x576_2944_searchweb.png (320x180) [134.6 KB] || InternalTides_1024x576_2944_web.png (320x180) [134.6 KB] || InternalTides_1024x576_2944_thm.png (80x40) [21.2 KB] || InternalTides_1280x720p30.mp4 (1280x720) [62.4 MB] || InternalTides_1920x1080_60fps_2944.tif (1920x1080) [7.9 MB] || InternalTides_1280x720p30.webm (1280x720) [15.1 MB] || InternalTides_1920x1080p30.mp4 (1920x1080) [120.7 MB] || InternalTides (3840x2160) [0 Item(s)] || InternalTides_3840x2160_60fps_2944.tif (3840x2160) [31.6 MB] || InternalTides_3840x2160_p30.mp4 (3840x2160) [376.1 MB] || InternalTides_1920x1080p30.mp4.hwshow [192 bytes] || ",
