            "description": "This image shows the entire sky as seen by Fermi's Large Area Telescope. Lighter colors indicate brighter gamma-ray sources. The map is centered on the center of our galaxy. The most prominent feature is the bright, diffuse glow running along the middle of the map, which marks the central plane of our Milky Way galaxy. The gamma rays there are mostly produced when energetic particles accelerated in the shock waves of supernova remnants collide with gas atoms and even light between the stars. Many of the star-like features above and below the Milky Way plane are distant galaxies powered by supermassive black holes. Many of the bright sources along the plane are pulsars. COBE took the first baby picture of the universe, revealing slight temperature variations when the cosmos was just 380,000 years old. This image shows the entire sky using four years of observations by COBE’s Differential Microwave Radiometer. The central plane of our galaxy runs across the middle, and its center is marked by a white X. Red indicates hotter regions, blue colder. The fluctuations are extremely faint, varying by only 1 part in 100,000 from the average temperature. They represent density variations in the early universe thought to have given rise to the structures we see today.             "description": "BurstCube is a mission developed at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. It is expected to launch in March 2024. This CubeSat will detect short gamma-ray bursts, brief flashes of the highest-energy form of light. Dense stellar remnants called neutron stars create these bursts when they collide with other neutron stars or black holes. Short gamma-ray bursts, which last less than 2 seconds, are important sources for gravitational wave discoveries and multimessenger astronomy. BurstCube will use Earth’s magnetic field to orientate itself as it scans the sky. To do so, the mission team had to map the spacecraft’s own magnetic field using a special facility at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. The magnetic calibration chamber generates a known magnetic field that cancels out Earth’s. The team's measurements of BurstCube’s field in the chamber will help figure out where the satellite is pointing once in space, so scientists can locate gamma-ray bursts and tell other observatories where to look. || ",

The most prominent feature is the bright, diffuse glow running along the middle of the map, which marks the central plane of our Milky Way galaxy. The gamma rays there are mostly produced when energetic particles accelerated in the shock waves of supernova remnants collide with gas atoms and even light between the stars. Many of the star-like features above and below the Milky Way plane are distant galaxies powered by supermassive black holes. Many of the bright sources along the plane are pulsars.             "description": "In the mid-1800s, mariners sailing the southern seas navigated at night by a brilliant star in the constellation Carina. The star, named Eta Carinae, was the second brightest star in the sky for more than a decade. Those mariners could hardly have imagined that by the mid-1860s the brilliant orb would no longer be visible. Eta Carinae was enveloped by a cloud of dust ejected during a violent outburst named “The Great Eruption.” Because of Eta Carinae's violent history, astronomers have kept watch over its activities. Although Hubble has monitored the volatile superstar for 25 years, it still is uncovering new revelations. Using Hubble to map the ultraviolet-light glow of magnesium embedded in warm gas, astronomers were surprised to discover the gas in places they had not seen it before.             "description": "This animation compares the fields-of-view of NASA's Kepler telescope and Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). It begins with Kepler's first observation zone and the constellation Cygnus.  It adds a single TESS camera field for comparison and then pulls back to show all four TESS camera fields, called an observation sector, and the amount of sky they cover.  The sphere of the sky unwraps into a flat projection, and all the regions observed by Kepler appear.  TESS's full two-year coverage appears in the proper sequence, starting in the southern hemisphere and ending in the northern hemisphere.
