            "description": "On October 9th, 2023, a heli-torch operator flew over the Fishlake National Forest in Utah, igniting a prescribed burn to assist in the regrowth of the Aspen tree population. The forest is renowned for the Pando clone, the largest organism ever found, spanning 106 acres and consisting of over 40,000 individual trees. Aspen trees, classified as pyrophile plants, rely on fire for reproduction. However, the encroachment of conifer trees in Fishlake National Forest has diminished local Aspen populations. By conducting prescribed burns, managers not only reduce the conifer tree population but also stimulate the regrowth of Aspen trees. This effort not only aims to restore Aspen populations for ecosystem rehabilitation but also contributes to advancements in wildfire science. Organizations such as US Forests Services’s FASMEE and NASA's FireSense participated in studying this burn, with NASA leveraging its unique Earth science and airborne technological capabilities to improve US wildland fire management. Beyond the fire lifecycle, NASA FireSense is intended to enable a transition from reactive to proactive fire response by facilitating increased preparedness and co-existence with fire through co-development of technology and data-informed tools with communities representing resource managers, policy-makers, and stakeholders at all levels.This page is dedicated to footage captured during the Fish Lake National Forest prescribed burn and the various events around it.NASA FireSense Website || ",

Such systems contain white dwarfs, neutron stars, or black holes in tight orbits. Maps like this using real data will be possible once space-based gravitational wave observatories become active in the next decade. The center of our Milky Way galaxy lies at the center of this all-sky view, with the galactic plane extending across the middle. Brighter spots indicate sources with stronger signals and lighter colors indicate those with higher frequencies. Larger colored patches show sources whose positions are less well known. The Naples region is one of the brightest in Italy. Roughly three million people live in and around this metropolitan area.The large black circular area in the photo is Mount Vesuvius, the only active volcano on Europe’s mainland. Although any volcanic activity can endanger surrounding communities, eruptive pyroclastic flows of superheated ash and gas are among the most dangerous, moving at speeds of hundreds of kilometers per hour. Vesuvius has erupted on numerous occasions throughout history. Probably the most famous of those eruptions occurred in 79 A.D., when pyroclastic flows destroyed the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, trapping more than 16,000 people. Such historic catastrophes—and the fact that 600,000 people currently live in the immediate vicinity—are why the volcano is one of the most heavily monitored in the world, with several dozen sensors located at many points on and around the cone.The different colors of lights in the scene reflect some of the history of development in the area. The green lights are mercury vapor bulbs, an older variety that has been replaced in newer developments by yellow-orange sodium bulbs. To the northeast, the lightless gaps between the homes and businesses are agricultural fields. It’s neither fully Earth nor space, and instead, reacts to both terrestrial weather below and solar energy streaming in from above, forming a complex space weather system of its own. The particles of the ionosphere carry electrical charge that can disrupt communications signals, cause satellites in low-Earth orbit to become electrically charged, and, in extreme cases, cause power outages on the ground.             "description": "Malaria is a major problem in the Amazon where malaria mosquitoes tend to prefer wet, hot areas with more standing water. Seasonal occupational movement along rivers and in forested areas increases transmission and concentrates malaria in specific regions. The objective of Malaria Project, an ongoing study led by William Pan and Ben Zaitchik, is to develop a detection and early warning system for malaria risk in the Amazon. Using data from NASA satellites and a Land Data Assimilation System (LDAS), the scientists hope that their research can help health officials pinpoint where to deploy resources and what resources to deploy during a disease outbreak.  By incorporating NASA data such as precipitation, soil moisture, air temperature, and humidity into their new system, scientists are better able to predict where malaria-spreading mosquitoes are breeding. These climate factors in conjunction with a population density and human movement model will help scientists better understand where and when people are at high risk for malaria. The malaria warning system will predict outbreaks and simulate response to help a country's health care system to more strategically determine where to deploy their resources.  Visualizations focus on Peru, one of the central areas of malaria transmission in the Amazon.  Four LDAS data sets -- precipitation, soil moisture, air temperature, and humidity are illustrated below. Combined with public health data, the animations show how these factors may affect the outbreak and evolvement of the disease. || ",

The research is the first to look at global, long-term phytoplankton community trends based on a model driven by NASA satellite data. Diatoms, the largest type of phytoplankton algae, have declined more than 1 percent per year from 1998 to 2012 globally, with significant losses occurring in the North Pacific, North Indian and Equatorial Indian oceans. The reduction in population may have an impact on the amount of carbon dioxide drawn out of the atmosphere and transferred to the deep ocean for long-term storage. || ",
