"description": "The NASA-sponsored Nationwide Eclipse Ballooning Project (NEBP) immerses teams of STEM learners from a wide range of higher education institutions in an innovative NASA-mission-like adventure in data acquisition and analysis through scientific ballooning during the Oct. 14, 2023, annular and April 8, 2024, total solar eclipses.NEBP includes development and implementation of two learner-centered activity tracks – engineering and atmospheric science. At sites along the eclipse path, student teams in the engineering track use innovative larger balloon systems to live stream video to the NASA eclipse website, observe in situ perturbations in atmospheric phenomena, and conduct individually designed experiments. Atmospheric science track teams make frequent observations by launching hourly radiosondes on helium-filled weather balloons. Student participants work with atmospheric science experts throughout the project and will publish results in peer-reviewed journals. The project fully supports 53 teams divided into nine pods to facilitate effective education. NEBP provides a learning environment that uses evidence and equity-based practices to make certain the 750+ participants are (and feel) supported, engaged, and valued. In addition, NEBP provides infrastructure tools and best practices to help participating institutions build collaborations that could continue far beyond the scope of this project.Learn more: https://science.nasa.gov/sciact-team/nationwide-eclipse-ballooning-project/ || ",

"description": "Airborne pollutants can negatively affect our health. Such molecules can flow from city to city via wind, building a river of smog as evident around our nation’s Northeast Corridor and over flatter terrain in the eastern U.S. One major air pollutant is nitrogen dioxide, a brownish gas commonly emitted from motor vehicle exhaust and power plants. This noxious chemical causes respiratory issues and promotes the formation of other harmful air pollutants like ground-level ozone. Observations by the Ozone Monitoring Instrument aboard NASA’s Aura satellite show that nitrogen dioxide levels have actually decreased nationwide by four percent per year since 2005. The decline is thought to stem partly from technology improvements, especially in the energy and transportation sectors. Watch the video to see changes in nitrogen dioxide levels across the U.S. from 2005 to 2011. || ",

This enormous spiral is 522,000 light-years across from the tip of one outstretched arm to the tip of the other, making it about five times the size of our home galaxy, the Milky Way. The galaxy's unusual size and appearance stem from interaction with a much smaller disk galaxy named IC 4970 (circled in yellow), which has only about one-fifth the mass of NGC 6872. This previously unsuspected tidal dwarf galaxy candidate appears only in the ultraviolet. The odd couple is located 212 million light-years from Earth in the southern constellation Pavo. This composite image of the giant barred spiral galaxy NGC 6872 combines ultraviolet data from NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) and infrared data acquired by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope with visible light images from the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope. Images of lower resolution from the Digital Sky Survey were used to fill in marginal areas not covered by the other data. || ",
