            "description": "View the entire sky with the microwave eyes of NASA’s COBE (Cosmic Background Explorer) satellite in this immersive video. COBE took the first baby picture of the universe, revealing slight temperature variations when the cosmos was just 380,000 years old. This image shows the entire sky using four years of observations by COBE’s Differential Microwave Radiometer. The central plane of our galaxy runs across the middle, and its center is marked by a white X. Red indicates hotter regions, blue colder. The fluctuations are extremely faint, varying by only 1 part in 100,000 from the average temperature. They represent density variations in the early universe thought to have given rise to the structures we see today. After stripping away foreground emission arising from dust, hot gas, and charged particles interacting with magnetic fields in our galaxy, COBE data revealed tiny variations in the temperature of the cosmic microwave background — the oldest light in the universe — for the first time.(This video is formatted for 360-degree use.)Credit: NASA's Goddard Space Flight CenterMusic: “Meetings in Underwater Ruins,” Philippe Andre Vandenhende [SACEM], Olivier Louis Perrot [SACEM] and Idriss-El-Mehdi Bennani [SACEM], Universal Production MusicWatch this video on the NASA Goddard YouTube channel.Complete transcript available. || YTframe_Design_hybrid_COBE_360.jpg (1280x720) [235.1 KB] || YTframe_Design_hybrid_COBE_360_searchweb.png (320x180) [80.8 KB] || YTframe_Design_hybrid_COBE_360_thm.png (80x40) [9.2 KB] || 14720_COBE_360_Captions.en_US.srt [4.7 KB] || 14720_COBE_360_Captions.en_US.vtt [4.4 KB] || 14720_COBE_360_Narrated_Good.mp4 (8192x4096) [131.8 MB] || 14720_COBE_360_Narrated_Best.mp4 (8192x4096) [503.2 MB] || ",

It is a reconfigured antenna used for teaching purposes.The GAVRT program teaches K-12 students how to calibrate this 34-meter antenna (known as Deep Space Station-28), collect and distribute science data through the Internet and get excited about radio astronomy. Students collaborate with scientists who are working on the same mission and are recognized as part of the science team. Data collected and analyzed by the students is used by NASA in their studies of the solar system.During the April 8, 2024, total solar eclipse, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, educators at the Lewis Center for Education Research in Southern California, and participants in the center’s Solar Patrol citizen science program will observe solar “active regions” – the magnetically complex regions that form over sunspots – as the Moon moves over them. The Moon’s gradual passage across the Sun blocks different portions of the active region at different times, allowing scientists to distinguish light signals coming from one portion versus another. The technique, first used during the May 2012 annular eclipse, revealed details on the Sun the telescope couldn’t otherwise detect. || ",

            "description": "El Niño is an irregularly recurring climate pattern characterized by warmer than usual ocean temperatures in the equatorial Pacific, which creates a ripple effect of anticipated weather changes in far-spread regions. This visualization captures monthly Sea Surface Temperature (SST) anomalies around the world from 2009-2018, along with locations of global disease outbreaks and a corresponding timeline showcasing the Niño 3.4 Index. The Niño 3.4 Index represents average equatorial sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean from about the International Date Line to the coast of South America. Highlighted in the timeline are the above average El Niño years, in which sea surface temperature anomalies peaked during 2015-2016. || SSTENSO_Diseases_Comp_2009_2018_1920x1080_0769_print.jpg (1024x576) [130.6 KB] || SSTENSO_Diseases_Comp_2009_2018_1920x1080_0769_searchweb.png (320x180) [79.7 KB] || SSTENSO_Diseases_Comp_2009_2018_1920x1080_0769_thm.png (80x40) [7.0 KB] || Composite (1920x1080) [0 Item(s)] || Composite (1920x1080) [0 Item(s)] || SSTENSO_Diseases_Comp_2009_2018_1920x1080_p30.mp4 (1920x1080) [23.0 MB] || SSTENSO_Diseases_Comp_2009_2018_1920x1080_0769.tif (1920x1080) [1.3 MB] || SSTENSO_Diseases_Comp_2009_2018_1920x1080_p30.webm (1920x1080) [4.7 MB] || SSTENSO_Diseases_Comp_2009_2018_1920x1080_p30.mp4.hwshow [211 bytes] || ",

            "title": "Southern Africa Drought",
            "description": "When a giant swell of warm water, known as El Niño emerged in the Pacific Ocean in 2015, scientists knew to look for impacts. As El Niño changed global weather patterns Southern Africa went into severe drought. On top of already dry conditions, the region experienced its lowest rainfall in 35 years.With the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission, launched in 2015, NASA has dedicated soil moisture measurements for the first time – and could see this severe drought emerging. SMAP's highly sensitive microwave radiometer detects the energy emitted by soil depending on how wet or how dry it is. The old gardener's trick is to squeeze a handful of dirt in your hand and see whether it clumps or falls apart. Think of SMAP doing the same thing – with a lot more precision, all around the world, every 3 days.SMAP allowed us to see a connection between Pacific Ocean water temperatures and the moisture of the soil in Southern Africa. These measurements are now being put to operational use more than ever. SMAP's data was fed into the USDA's global crop yield forecasts – the Foreign Agriculture Service reports that help drive multi-billion dollar commodity markets around the world. In fact, the Foreign Ag Service scientist for this region said that with SMAP they now have the first reliable soil moisture data in 30 years.As crops failed and soils were left bare, we used the Terra and Aqua satellites to assess these effects on the vegetation from a local to regional scale. The Normalized Differential Vegetation Index (NDVI) reflects the health of vegetation on the land surface.As this drought spread across Southern Africa, nearly 30 million people were at risk of drastic food shortages. Four out of 10 people did not have access to clean drinking water.The analyses and data provided by NASA scientists are also critical to a USAID program called the Famine Early Warning Systems Network. As food crises arise, the global view provided by NASA scientists informs decisions about where governments and relief agencies should send help.In Southern Africa in 2015 and 2016, nearly 350 million dollars of emergency water and food aid were delivered, in part based on NASA data, to aid millions of people.As the peak of the drought hits in January 2016, the animations show the low soil moisture conditions in Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Botswana. Correspondingly the low vegetation appears in that region as well. || ",

            "description": "One way to study the spatial distribution, or arrangement, of human settlements is to view the planet from space during nighttime hours. Scientists have observed the Earth’s lights at night for more than four decades using military satellites and astronaut photography; however, the view became significantly clearer after using satellite data from a low-light sensor onboard the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) satellite, launched in October 2011. The satellite’s Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) “day-night band” can observe dim signals such as city lights (down to the scale of an isolated highway lamp), wildfires, gas flares, auroras, and reflected moonlight during nighttime hours. Swaths of VIIRS data are processed to find moonless, non-cloudy pixels. These “good” pixels are averaged at each location to produce a global image that depicts the Earth’s lights at night. Each pixel shows roughly 0.46 miles (742 meters) across.The top image, centered on France, is a composite of VIIRS data acquired between October 1, 2014 and April 30, 2015. Paris is visible just above the center of the image. North of Paris and across the English Channel (black), London is visible. The relatively dim Alps, characterized by their crescent-shaped geography, are speckled with lights from car headlights and lit roadways. South of the Alps several major cities in Italy are visible with the brightest spot being Milan. Rome is visible in the bottom right of the image. Strings and clusters of light out at sea are produced by ship lights. The second image, centered on France, is a composite of data from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Operational Linescan System (OLS) acquired during 2013. Each pixel shows roughly 1.86 miles (3 kilometers) across. The DMSP OLS night-lights data are available starting in 1992, and provide the ability to measure changes in light extent and locations over the past two decades.The image of Australia at night is a composite of VIIRS data acquired between January 1, 2015 and July 31, 2015. Major cities such as Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth are well lit along the coast. Alice Springs—situated in the geographic center of Australia—is some 1,500 kilometers from the nearest major city. Transient lights—those visible in only one monthly image—are colored red. These lights are mainly from brushfires burning during the dry season (May-July) in Australia’s Northern Territory and northern parts of Western Australia. Aside from fires, some of the transient lights could be attributed to natural gas flares, lightning, oil drilling, or mining operations. || ",

            "description": "Aquarius is an international effort to measure sea surface salinity and learn about the interaction between ocean circulation, the water cycle and climate. Besides salinity, Aquarius also measures sea surface temperature because salinity and temperature determines seawater density and buoyancy. Sea-surface density drives formation of ocean water masses and three-dimensional ocean circulation. Thus better understanding of ocean salinity and temperature improves understanding of the ocean's capacity to store and transport heat. The animation shows the changes of sea surface temporature from September 7, 2011 to May 20, 2015. || ",

            "description": "Sea surrface density is derived from Aquarius science products and generated by the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center's Aquarius Data Processing System. It is very important because sea surface density drives formation of ocean water masses and three-dimensional ocean circulation. As water parcels sink and move through the ocean, their densities will be modified by mixing with other parcels of seawater. However, if the density signatures of all the end member water masses are known, this mixing can be \"unraveled\" to determine the proportions of their various source waters. This animation shows the changes of sea surface density from September 7, 2011 to May 20, 2015. || ",

Two JAXA datasets used in this animation are the 10-km daily sea ice concentration and the 10 km daily 89 GHz Brightness Temperature.In this animation, the daily Arctic sea ice and seasonal land cover change progress through time, from March 21, 2014 through the 3rd of August, 2014. Over the water, Arctic sea ice changes from day to day showing a running 3-day minimum sea ice concentration in the region where the concentration is greater than 15%. The blueish white colour of the sea ice is derived from a 3-day running minimum of the AMSR2 89 GHz brightness temperature. Over the land, monthly data from the seasonal Blue Marble Next Generation fades slowly from month to month. || ",

            "description": "Data acquired by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) satellite were used to create this nighttime view of Japan and the Korean Peninsula in May 2014. NOAA’s Earth Observation Group creates monthly composite nighttime images from the VIIRS day-night band (DNB) by combining cloud-free data from nights without moonlight (i.e., during the new moon phase). Here the monthly composite image has been combined with a cloud-free MODIS image that has been modified to appear more “night-like” to highlight the Earth’s land surface.City lights make several urban centers easily discernable. For example, Tokyo, Japan, located on the southeastern side of the main island, is the brightest location on the image. It is also the most populous metropolitan area in the world. Clusters of light out at sea—particularly in and around the Korean Straight—are produced by the lights from hundreds of fishing boats engaged in night fishing. One such cluster surrounds Jeju Island, South Korea—a popular tourist destination—where fishermen shine torchlights on the water to attract squid, a traditional Jeju food. The reason the lights are so prominent around the island in this image is because the time the data were collected (i.e., May during new moon) overlaps with one of the peak fishing seasons for this region—spring, during new moon. || ",
