            "description": "Atmospheric gravity waves are similar to what happens when you drop a stone into a calm pond, but they roll through the air and cloud tops instead of water. Just like waves form in the ocean or a lake when water is disturbed, waves also form in the atmosphere when air is disturbed. They form when air is forced upward by hills or mountains into a layer of stable air in the atmosphere. Gravity causes the air to fall back down, and it begins to oscillate, creating a ripple effect. Wind flowing over the Rocky Mountains, for example, can create gravity waves that are felt as turbulence on an airplane. || ",

The ongoing record gives scientists the ability to monitor land-based changes and see the impact of natural events and soaring human populations around the world. But in addition to their practical applications, many of the images are simply stunning to look at. By combining different wavelengths of light—some invisible to the human eye—ordinary views of clouds, mountains or rivers are transformed into museum-quality works of art.             "title": "Bright Waters off Namibia's Coast",
            "description": "Ocean waters glowed peacock green off the northern Namibian coast on November 21, 2010. These bright swirls of green occur along a continental shelf bustling with biological activity. Phytoplankton blooms often occur along coastlines where nutrient-rich waters well up from ocean depths. The light color of this ocean water suggests the calcite plating of coccolithophores.Farther south along the coast of Namibia, hydrogen sulfide eruptions occur fairly frequently. According to a study published in 2009, ocean currents deliver oxygen-poor water from the north, while the bacteria that break down phytoplankton also consume oxygen, depleting the supply even more. In this oxygen-poor environment, anaerobic bacteria produce hydrogen sulfide gas. When the hydrogen sulfide reaches oxygen-rich surface waters, sulfur precipitates into the water. The sulfur’s yellow mixes with the deep blue ocean to make bright green. So this swirl of bright green could contain phytoplankton, sulfur, or a combination of the two. || ",
