And on June 25th, the fourth and final installation of the GOES-R series is set to launch from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. As the final satellite in NOAA’s GOES-R (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites) series, GOES-U will continue to provide fast, clear and reliable  weather-tracking information. GOES-U will provide real-time data for monitoring severe weather, hurricanes, wildfires, floods, fog and even lightning. Not only that, GOES-U carries a suite of instruments, including the first operational compact coronagraph, to monitor the Sun and warn us of approaching space weather hazards. A coronagraph is an instrument that blocks out the bright disk of the Sun so that researchers can see our star’s fainter outer atmosphere where much of the solar activity originates. This new coronagraph will better detect and characterize coronal mass ejections. The GOES series of weather satellites are parked in a geostationary orbit at points over the equator and rotate at the same speed as the Earth. The fixed location provides continuous coverage of weather conditions across the Western hemisphere. Once in orbit GOES-U will be renamed GOES-19. After an on-orbit check out to ensure its instruments and systems are working properly, GOES-19 will go into service as GOES-East, replacing GOES-16.             "description": "The summer of 2023 was Earth’s hottest since global records began in 1880, according to an analysis by scientists at NASA’s Goddard Institute of Space Studies (GISS) in New York.The months of June, July, and August combined were 0.41 degrees Fahrenheit (0.23 degrees Celsius) warmer than any other summer in NASA’s record, and 2.1 degrees F (1.2 C) warmer than the average summer between 1951 and 1980. August alone was 2.2 F (1.2 C) warmer than the average. June through August is considered meteorological summer in the Northern Hemisphere. This new record comes as exceptional heat swept across much of the world, exacerbating deadly wildfires in Canada and Hawaii, and searing heat waves in South America, Japan, Europe, and the U.S., while likely contributing to severe rainfall in Italy, Greece, and Central Europe.NASA assembles its temperature record, known as GISTEMP, from surface air temperature data acquired by tens of thousands of meteorological stations, as well as sea surface temperature data from ship- and buoy-based instruments. Earth in July 2023 was 1.18ºC (2.12ºF) warmer than the average for the month, and warmer than any other month in the 143-year record.\"We know that this is having impacts, said NASA Climate Scientist and GISS Director Gavin Schmidt. “We know that it is inducing heat waves. We know that it is leading to more intense rainfall, we're seeing that in many places in the world. And we know it's a contributing factor to the growth of wildfires in areas that have been affected by the temperatures.\" The warmer-than-usual July continues a long-term trend of warming, driven primarily by human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. July 2023 was 0.24°C (0.43°F) warmer than any previous July in NASA’s record. And according to GISS temperature anomaly data, the top-five hottest Julys since 1880 have all happened in the past five years.             "description": "During the summer of 1975, Jacques Cousteau and his divers helped NASA determine if Landsat could measure the depth of shallow ocean waters. The story of this NASA-led satellite bathymetry experiment unfolds through the photography and expedition documents preserved by David Lychenheim, the expedition’s communications engineer. Research done during that expedition determined that in certain conditions Landsat could measure depths up to 22 meters (72 feet), which gave birth to the field of satellite-derived bathymetry.             "description": "Servicing Mission 3B was actually the fourth visit to Hubble. NASA split the original Servicing Mission 3 into two parts and conducted 3A in December of 1999. During SM3B a new science instrument will be installed: the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS). Several other activities were accomplished as well over a 12-day mission with 5 spacewalks.Four astronauts trained for five scheduled spacewalks to upgrade and service the Hubble Space Telescope during the STS-109 mission in early 2002. Three veteran astronauts, John M.Grunsfeld, James H. Newman, and Richard M. Linnehan, were joined by Michael J. Massimino, who will be making his first space flight.Scott Altman, (Cmdr., USN), a two-time shuttle veteran, commanded the STS-109 mission. He was joined on the flight deck by pilot Duane Carey, (Lt. She was a co-investigator on the Cassini Composite Infrared Spectrometer (CIRS) and is the Deputy Instrument Scientist for the OSIRIS-REx Visible and near-IR Spectrometer (OVIRS), as well as the Landsat 9 TIRS2 instrument, and the Lucy L'Ralph instrument Deputy PI.
