            "description": "While the Artemis II crew will be the first humans to test NASA’s Orion spacecraft in space, they will also conduct science investigations that will inform future deep space missions. During the 10-day past the Moon and back, the Orion capsule will fly by the far side of the Moon — the side that always faces away from Earth. During this three-hour period, astronauts will analyze and photograph geologic features, such as impact craters and ancient lava flows. They will rely on the extensive geology training they received in the classroom and in Moon-like places on Earth to describe nuances in shapes, textures, and colors — the type of information that reveals the geologic history of an area.             "description": "This visualization shows the location of the Hiawatha Glacier near Inglefield Land in northwest Greenland. The surface of the ice sheet fades away to show the impact crater discovered beneath the ice sheet. A red cylinder shows the best-fit rim of the impact crater and a measuring stick shows that the diameter of the crater is more than 31 kilometers across. The size of the crater is compared to the cities of Washington, DC and Paris, France.The visualization also shows how the scientists from Germany's Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI)  flew the Polar 6 aircraft (a DC-3T) to collect radar data over the Hiawatha impact crater. They portray both the location and size of the 31-kilometer-wide impact crater beneath Hiawatha Glacier. They also portray the structure of the glacier ice that flows into and fills the crater.The Hiawatha impact crater was first suspected to exist in the summer of 2015, from examination of a compilation of Greenland's sub-ice topography radar measurements made by NASA over two decades. The visualizations of the subsurface shown below are derived from a spring 2016 airborne survey by Germany's Alfred Wegener Institute, using a new ultrawideband radar sounder developed by the Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets at The University of Kansas. Subsequent helicopter visits to the deglaciated terrain in front of Hiawatha Glacier by scientists from the Natural History Museum in Denmark recovered sediment samples from the main river that discharges water from beneath Hiawatha Glacier, through the northwestern rim breach. Laboratory examination revealed that these sediment samples contained shocked quartz and elevated platinum-group-element concentrations, both signs that the sediment records evidence of the impact of an iron asteroid more than one kilometer wide. The Hiawatha impact crater is potentially one of the youngest large impact craters on Earth.In the visualizations below, the elevation of the topography of the bed, the ice surface and the radar curtains have been exaggerated ten times in order to better illustrate their structure. || ",

Such flows resulted in the large, dark spots on the moon’s surface that we see today. Scientists thought the moon's last volcanoes erupted at least 1 billion years ago. But new observations by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft have revealed dozens of geologic structures, called irregular mare patches, scattered across the lunar landscape. In these unusual areas, averaging 500 meters in diameter, smooth mounds sit next to blocky terrain. Unlike the rest of the moon, the structures have almost no craters, suggesting that they’re the remnants of recent lava flows that occurred within the last 100 million years. It features a free-air gravity map of the Moon's southern latitudes developed by S. Goossens et al. from data returned by the Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) mission.If the Moon were a perfectly smooth sphere of uniform density, the gravity map would be a single, featureless color, indicating that the force of gravity at a given elevation was the same everywhere. But like other rocky bodies in the solar system, including Earth, the Moon has both a bumpy surface and a lumpy interior. Spacecraft in orbit around the Moon experience slight variations in gravity caused by both of these irregularities.The free-air gravity map shows deviations from the mean gravity that a cueball Moon would have. The deviations are measured in milliGals, a unit of acceleration. On the map, purple is at the low end of the range, at around -400 mGals, and red is at the high end near +400 mGals. Yellow denotes the mean.The map shown here extends from the south pole of the Moon up to 50°S and reveals the gravity for that region in even finer detail than the global gravity maps published previously. As the twin spacecraft move along the same orbit, they react to the mass of features on the surface below them (e.g., mountains and craters) as well as features hidden beneath the surface. In orbit, the two spacecraft transmit radio signals to define precisely the distance between them.             "description": "In October of 1959, the Luna 3 spacecraft launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Luna 3 was the third spacecraft to reach the Moon and the first to send back pictures of the Moon's far side. The pictures were noisy and indistinct, but because the Moon always presents the same face to the Earth, they offered views of a part of the Moon that had never been seen before.The far side of the Moon is surprisingly different. The most striking difference evident in the Luna 3 pictures is the absence of the large, dark seas of cooled lava, called maria, that cover a substantial fraction of the Earth-facing near side. The far side is instead densely peppered with impact craters of every size and age.Fifty years later, in June of 2009, Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Using LRO's global elevation maps and photographic mosaics, both of which are of unprecedented quality and detail, it's possible to accurately recreate the view captured in the pictures from Luna 3. As seen here, Luna 3 was directly over 12°N 120°E at a distance of 61,700 kilometers above the surface, and its camera was banked 17.5° clockwise from vertical relative to the Moon's north pole.The thicker blue longitude line at 90°E, along the left side of the LRO image, marks the boundary between the near and far sides of the Moon. To the left of that line are the familiar maria Crisium (the circular spot near the 9 o'clock position), Marginis, Smythii (both east of Crisium), Humboldtianum (in the north), Australe (near the south pole), and the eastern edge of Fecunditatis. The bright spot near the center of the disk is a complex of unnamed craters bordered by King, Langemak, Gregory, and Abul Wafa craters. The brightness is enhanced because it's near the subsolar point. The dark, sharp-edged shield shape in the southern hemisphere, with the white dot in the middle, is Tsiolkovskiy crater and its central peak. The dark spot to the southeast of Tsiolkovskiy is the crater Jules Verne. The mare in the northeast is Moscoviense. || ",

The map on this page was produced as an observing aid for the event. It shows the phase and libration of the Moon for noon Universal Time on the date of the event, with labels for many of the features that are visible on that date. A corresponding observing list is available as a PDF.The list includes items visible with the naked eye and with binoculars as well as telescopic targets. The Moon is just past First Quarter. Naked eye observers can see the shape and orientation of the daylit side and the difference in brightness of the northern and southern parts. They can probably make out the two largest maria, the Seas of Serenity and Tranquility. Those with keen eyes might also discern several less prominent maria, as well as a couple of bright spots near the southeastern limb.These bright spots, near the craters Langrenus and Stevinus, are easier to see in binoculars, which will also show the Apennine Mountains and the irregularity of the terminator, the line between day and night. A telescope reveals that the terminator crosses a densely cratered region in the south, and elsewhere, it can resolve long, cliff-like scarps and the remnants of an extinct volcano. Although Apollo artifacts can't be seen by any Earthbound telescope, four of the six landing sites are in daylight at First Quarter. || ",
