"description": "Volcanic, tectonic, erosional and sedimentary landforms are all evident in this elevation model image of a region along the East African Rift at Lake Kivu. The area shown covers parts of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda.Lake Kivu, in the lower left of the image, lies within the East African Rift, an elongated tectonic pull-apart depression in Earth's crust. The rift extends to the northeast as a smooth lava- and sediment-filled trough. Two volcanic complexes are seen in the rift. The one closer to the lake is the Nyiragongo volcano, which erupted in January 2002, sending lava toward the lake shore and through the city of Goma. East of the rift, even more volcanoes are seen. These are the Virunga volcano chain, which is the home of the endangered mountain gorillas. Note that the terrain surrounding the volcanoes is much smoother than the eroding mountains that cover most of this view, such that topography alone is a good indicator of the extent of the lava flows.Elevation data used in this image was acquired by the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour, launched on Feb. 11, 2000. The mission used the same radar instrument that comprised the Spaceborne Imaging Radar-C/X-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SIR-C/X-SAR) that flew twice on Endeavour in 1994. || ",

The images were captured with Curiosity's front and rear Hazard-Avoidance Cameras, or Hazcams. A long series of images can be put together to create a video so that scientists can look for passing clouds or dust devils, which teach them more about the Martian environment. The perfect time for doing this type of work is when Curiosity is less active for long stretches, as it was during Mars solar conjunction. The lack of robotic arm motion and driving during conjunction allowed the Hazcams to image for 12 hours of a day for the first time. While these Hazcam videos didn't reveal any clouds or dust activity, they did capture the passage of time as the Sun rose and set. || ",

The video was inspired by the first television test broadcast of Felix the Cat in 1928, and the influence that cat videos have had on popular culture. It was part of the technology demonstration known as Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC), which is attached to the Psyche spacecraft traveling to the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.Uploaded before launch, the short ultra-high definition video features an orange tabby cat named Taters, the pet of a JPL employee, chasing a laser pointer, with overlayed graphics. The graphics illustrate several features from the tech demo, such as Psyche’s orbital path, Palomar’s telescope dome, and technical information about the laser and its data bit rate. This work has helped explain an unusual structure called the “Green Monster”. Composite images from Chandra, Webb, Hubble, NuSTAR, and Spitzer reveal where elements such as silicon, iron, and titanium are located. Comparing where certain elements are with the location of the blast wave, researchers conclude that the Green Monster was created by a blast wave from the exploded star slamming into material surrounding it. || ",

An international team of astronomers assembled and reprocessed Hubble observations of exoplanet WASP-121 b, also known as Tylos, in the years 2016, 2018 and 2019. They found clear evidence that the observations of WASP-121 b were varying in time. The team then used sophisticated modelling techniques to demonstrate that these temporal variations could be explained by weather patterns in the exoplanet's atmosphere, specifically, massive cyclones that are repeatedly created and destroyed due to the huge temperature difference between the star-facing and dark side of the exoplanet. || ",

"description": "50 years ago, on December 7, 1972, an astronaut looked out the window of the Apollo 17 spacecraft and snapped a photo that would become a symbol of Earth as our precious, fragile home. The image, centered at about 40 E longitude, shows Earth at local noon near the winter solstice. Africa, Arabia, Madagascar, and Antarctica are visible under swirling clouds. Now, since 2015, NASA's Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) onboard NOAA's Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) satellite has been imaging the sunlit side of Earth between 13 and 22 times a day from the Lagrange point 1, a million miles away from Earth. These images from EPIC show nearly identical views. The first, from Dec 7, 2022, was acquired on the 50-year anniversary of the iconic Blue Marble photo. The second, from summer solstice 2022, this image is centered further north than the original and shows Europe and Arctic sea ice. The third image, taken on December 4, 2021, nearly 49 years after the Blue Marble includes a new bonus feature: 2021’s only total solar eclipse. || ",

The Mile High City rose up on the hopes of gold miners, who founded the city in 1858 after the discovery of gold in the waters at the confluence of the South Platte River and Cherry Creek. Denver, Colorado, quickly became a hub for the mining towns to the west and the agricultural interests on the plains to the east. Unhindered by any major body of water or topographic feature to the north, south, or east, the city has expanded in all directions. These red-NIR-green combination false color images show the city of Denver between 1972 or 1972 and 2022, using sensors aboard Landsat satellites that have been collecting data in different ranges of frequencies along the electromagnetic spectrum for nearly 50 years. || ",

Cloudiness is shown in shades of white/gray below the rain rates, based on geosynchronous satellite infrared observations. Surigae's intensity is shown by the multi-colored line, based on estimates by the U.S. Navy-Air Force Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) using the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale from 1 to 5. Typhoon Surigae formed over the Western Pacific Ocean on April 13, 2021, intensifying to a Category 1-equivalent storm by April 16 as it passed north of Palau. Surigae continued to intensify as it approached the Philippines, reaching Category-5 intensity by April 17 before gradually weakening as its path recurved to the northeast. Although Surigae didn't make landfall, it left heavy rainfall accumulations in its path, including over Palau, which IMERG estimated received over 300 millimeters (12 inches) of rainfall during the period of the animation. Local rain gauges showed similar accumulations during the same period of time.NASA's IMERG product is a multi-satellite global estimate of rainfall produced in near real-time at half-hourly intervals. The global span of IMERG covers the oceans as well as land areas, which is a major advantage over ground-based radar and rain gauge measurements. IMERG allows atmospheric scientists to study extreme weather events, such as typhoons, and better understand the mechanisms that drive them, leading to better preparedness for future events. || ",

These maps show Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values—a measure of the \"greenness\" of Earth's landscapes—from February 2000 to the present. The values, derived using data collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard NASA's Terra satellite, range from -0.1 to 0.9 and have no unit. Rather, they are index values in which higher values (0.4 to 0.9) show lands covered by green, leafy vegetation and lower values (0 to 0.4) show lands where there is little or no vegetation. Dark green areas show where there was a lot of green leaf growth; light greens show where there was some green leaf growth; and tan areas show little or no growth. Black means no data. || ",

Surface concentrations of carbon monoxide are expressed in parts per billion by volume (ppbv). A concentration of 1 ppbv means that for every billion molecules of gas in the measured volume, one of them is a carbon monoxide molecule. Total column carbon monoxide is expressed in number of molecules (times 10^18) per centimeter squared. A total column amount of 1 means that the total amount of carbon monoxide in a vertical column from the top of the atmosphere to the surface is 10^18 molecules per square centimeter. In these maps, yellow areas have little or no carbon monoxide, while progressively higher concentrations are shown in orange, red, and dark red. || ",

"title": "Urban Growth in Las Vegas",
"description": "The city of Las Vegas—meaning the meadows—was established in 1905. Its grassy meadows and artesian springs attracted settlers traveling across the arid Desert Southwest in the early 1800s. In the 1930s, gambling became legalized and construction of the Hoover Dam began, resulting in the city's first growth spurt. Since then, Las Vegas has not stopped growing. Population has reached nearly two million over the past decade, becoming one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the world. These false-color images show the rapid urbanization of Las Vegas between 1972 and 2018. The city streets and other impervious surfaces appear gray, while irrigated vegetation appears red. Over the years, the expansion of irrigated vegetation (e.g., lawns and golf courses) has stretched the city’s desert bounds. || ",

"description": "The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment Follow-on (GRACE-FO) mission, launched on May 22, 2018 is a successor to the original 2002 GRACE mission, which monitored Earth's gravity by measuring the distance between two satllites following each other in orbit around Earth. In addition to carrying on the original series of measurements made by a microwave ranging system, the GRACE FO mission will test a new laser ranging interferometer, which will provide higher precision distance measurements. These two images show the first data from the Microwave Ranging Instrument and the Laser Ranging Interferometer (LRI) instrument onboard GRACE FO. The raw data for both instruments is a plot of inter-spacecraft distance, which changes as the spacecraft pass over varying mass distribution caused by features on Earth such as large mountain ranges. The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment Follow-on (GRACE-FO) mission is a partnership between NASA and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). || ",

"title": "Mars 2018 Global Dust Storm",
"description": "These images were originally published on JPL's Planetary Photojournal, and are adapted here for use on NASA's Hyperwall. On Wednesday, May 30, 2018, NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) detected the start of a Martian dust storm. Ballooning quickly, the storm blanketed a quarter of the planet by June 12. By June 19, the storm was officially a “planet-encircling dust event”—less precisely called a \"global\" dust storm, though these storms never truly cover the entire globe of Mars. Because the dust blocks out the sunlight Opportunity’s solar panels need to charge its batteries, scientists had to suspend science activities. As of July 18, no response has been received from Opportunity since June 10. Meanwhile, the nuclear-powered Curiosity rover is largely immune to the darkened skies, allowing it to continue collecting data.Scientists observing the event say that, as of July 23, 2018, more dust is falling out than is being raised into the planet's thin air. That means the event has reached its decay phase. Once the dust settles, it will likely form a fine film only a few tens of microns thick—about the width of a human hair. This means Opportunity’s solar panels may be covered by a fine film of dust. That could delay a recovery of the rover as it gathers energy to recharge its batters. Opportunity will wake up again once it gets enough sunlight to charge its batteries, at which point it will automatically try to phone home—which scientists are cautiously optimistic will happen. || ",
