As the camera zooms in, GPM's GPROF data reveals surface rain rates. GPM's DPR 3D volumetric precipitation structure quickly dissolves in to show the entire precipitation structure of Winston. The camera then moves down to the side of the storm to show it's profile, revealing the height of Winston's massive precipitation structures. As the camera moves up and around, Winston is dissected, revealing the heavy precipitation structure surrounding the Cyclone's eye. The camera then finally pulls back, while Winston's outer precipitation structures are draped back over to get one final top down view of the Cyclone over Fiji. || winston_comp_v3.0610_print.jpg (1024x576) [158.1 KB] || winston_comp_v3_1080p30.mp4 (1920x1080) [29.7 MB] || Composite (1920x1080) [0 Item(s)] || Country_Outlines (1920x1080) [0 Item(s)] || Data_Overlay (1920x1080) [0 Item(s)] || Earth_Background (1920x1080) [0 Item(s)] || winston_comp_v3_1080p30.webm (1920x1080) [4.6 MB] || winston_comp_v3_1080p30.mp4.hwshow [189 bytes] || ",

"description": "CloudSat overpassed Tropical Storm Leslie in the Atlantic Ocean on August 31, 2012 at 1653 UTC. Leslie contained maximum sustained winds of 65 mph with a minimum central pressure of 999 mb. CloudSat overpassed directly over a developing cumulonimbus cloud with an overshooting cloud top near the center of the storm. This animation combines Cloudsat imagery with an animation of GOES weather satellite images.Tropical Storm Leslie was moving towards the NW and experiencing moderate shear from the NE (note the lack of cirrus canopy in NE portions of the storm). CloudSat overpassed an area of buoyant tropical convection associated with strong updrafts. The overpass reveals the overshooting cloud tops extending over 17 km into the atmosphere and penetrating the lower stratosphere. The CPR signal attenuates in areas of moderate and heavy rainfall, quite evident in the region of the overshooting cloud top. || ",

"title": "A Changed Coastline in New Jersey",
"description": "On October 29, 2012, Superstorm Sandy changed the lives of many living along the U.S. East Coast—especially along the shorelines of New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut. At landfall, heavy rains pelted states as far inland as Wisconsin and surging seawater washed away beaches and flooded streets, businesses, and homes. These two images show a portion of the New Jersey coastal town of Mantolokig, just north of where the storm made landfall, before (March 18, 2007) and after (October 31, 2012) the storm. On the barrier island, entire blocks of houses along Route 35 (also called Ocean Boulevard) were damaged or completely washed away by the storm surge and wind. Fires raged in the town from natural gas lines that had ruptured and ignited. A new inlet was cut across the island, connected the Atlantic Ocean and the Jones Tide Pond. || ",

"description": "Water is fundamental to life on Earth. Knowing where and how much rain and snow falls globally is vital to understanding how weather and climate impact both our environment and Earth's water and energy cycles, including effects on agriculture, fresh water availability, and responses to natural disasters. Since rainfall and snowfall vary greatly from place to place and over time, satellites can provide more uniform observations of rain and snow around the globe than ground instruments, especially in areas where surface measurements are difficult. GPM's next-generation global precipitation data will lead to scientific advances and societal benefits in the following areas: Improved knowledge of the Earth's water cycle and its link to climate change New insights into precipitation microphysics, storm structures and large-scale atmospheric processes Better understanding of climate sensitivity and feedback processes Extended capabilities in monitoring and predicting hurricanes and other extreme weather events Improved forecasting capabilities for natural hazards, including floods, droughts and landslides. Enhanced numerical prediction skills for weather and climate Better agricultural crop forecasting and monitoring of freshwater resources. For more information and resources please visit the Precipitation Measurement Missions web site. || ",
