            "description": "NASA’s IMAP (Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe) spacecraft arrived May 10, 2025, for processing at the Astrotech Space Operations Facility near the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The mission will study how the Sun shapes the boundaries of the heliosphere, the bubble around our solar system.  A semitrailer transported the spacecraft from NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, after completing thermal vacuum testing, which simulates the harsh conditions of space, at the X-ray and Cryogenic Facility. Astrotech provides the facility and technicians to prepare the spacecraft for launch, including fueling and encapsulation.  The IMAP spacecraft launched Sept. 24, 2025, on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA Kennedy. || ",

And on June 25th, the fourth and final installation of the GOES-R series is set to launch from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. As the final satellite in NOAA’s GOES-R (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites) series, GOES-U will continue to provide fast, clear and reliable  weather-tracking information. GOES-U will provide real-time data for monitoring severe weather, hurricanes, wildfires, floods, fog and even lightning. Not only that, GOES-U carries a suite of instruments, including the first operational compact coronagraph, to monitor the Sun and warn us of approaching space weather hazards. A coronagraph is an instrument that blocks out the bright disk of the Sun so that researchers can see our star’s fainter outer atmosphere where much of the solar activity originates. This new coronagraph will better detect and characterize coronal mass ejections. The GOES series of weather satellites are parked in a geostationary orbit at points over the equator and rotate at the same speed as the Earth. The fixed location provides continuous coverage of weather conditions across the Western hemisphere. Once in orbit GOES-U will be renamed GOES-19. After an on-orbit check out to ensure its instruments and systems are working properly, GOES-19 will go into service as GOES-East, replacing GOES-16.             "description": "In Spring of 2016, Operation IceBridge conducted its eight spring Arctic survey of polar ice over the course of five weeks. Six research flights studying sea ice were based in Thule, Greenland, while ten that focused on land ice flew out of Kangerlussuaq in southern Greenland.For the survey, the crew utilized National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s P-3 Orion Hurricane Hunter plane. NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia provided the laser altimeter and one of the infrared cameras on the P-3. IceBridge's three radar instruments came from the Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets at the University of Kansas, while NASA's Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, California, provided the Digital Mapping System, and the University of Colorado loaned the second infrared camera.During this campaign the IceBridge aircraft flew under the path of Sentinel-3A, a recently launched ESA satellite that carries a radar altimeter that gauges sea ice thickness. Scientists will compare the Sentinel-3A measurements to the data IceBridge collected over the same spots with its radar and laser altimeters. This comparison will help validate and refine Sentinel-3A’s data gathering. || ",

This interagency effort is the latest generation of U.S. polar-orbiting, non-geosynchronous environmental satellites. As the backbone of the global observing system, JPSS polar satellites circle the Earth from pole-to-pole and cross the equator about 14 times daily in the afternoon orbit—providing full global coverage twice a day. Satellites in the JPSS constellation gather global measurements of atmospheric, terrestrial and oceanic conditions, including sea and land surface temperatures, vegetation, clouds, rainfall, snow and ice cover, fire locations and smoke plumes, atmospheric temperature, water vapor and ozone.
