            "description": "NASA’s Black and Diffuse Aurora Science Surveyor sounding rocket mission has completed its testing campaign at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, ahead of its launch.  Sounding rocket missions like this one are suborbital rockets that fly scientific instruments into near-Earth space for short, approximately 15-minute flights. The mission will study so-called “black auroras,” dark patches and stripes that appear within an aurora. Previous research has hinted that they may be formed by electrons going upward escaping back out into space (rather than the absence of any electrons). The visible aurora is formed by an incoming downward stream of electrons. Scientists want to solve the puzzle as to why these patches and stripes form within the visible aurora. From Goddard, the instruments were delivered to Wallops Flight Facility, where they – along with the entire rocket payload – will be shipped to the Poker Flat Research Range in Fairbanks, Alaska, where the team aims to fly their rocket through black aurora. Onboard instruments will survey the electron populations as they fly through them to understand how and why these black patches and stripes form within the visible aurora. The mission is scheduled for launch no earlier than February 2026. || ",

Space weather disturbances can impact communications, navigation signals, and satellite orbits, and induce currents can trigger power outages on Earth — making the region a crucial area of study.GDC is a team of satellites that will study Earth’s upper atmosphere and provide the first direct global measurements of our planet’s dynamic and complex interface with the space environment. Working in tandem with the DYNAMIC spacecraft, scientists will be able paint a fuller picture of how energy transforms and travels throughout the upper atmosphere. GDC will fly at an altitude of 350-400 km.DYNAMIC is a pair of satellites that will work in tandem with GDC to study how changes in Earth’s lower atmosphere influence our planet’s upper atmosphere.             "description": "According to a July 29 2022 report from the International Food Security and Nutrition Working Group, the worst drought conditions in 70 years across the Horn of Africa have more than 16 million people coping with a shortage of drinking water. Yields of key crops are down for the third year in a row, milk production is in decline, and more than 9 million livestock animals have been lost due to a lack of water and suitable forage land. At the same time, regional conflicts, COVID-19, locusts, and the Ukraine War have caused price spikes and shortages of basic commodities. An estimated 18 to 21 million people now \"face high levels of acute food insecurity\" in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia.These animations depict root zone and surface soil moisture observations and forecasts from the NASA Hydrological Forecast and Analysis System (NHyFAS). Reds depict areas with soil moisture percentages below the average, while blues reflect areas that are above average (often due to passing storms). The first 27 seconds of the animation show soil moisture from August 2020 through June 2022. The final 10 seconds show forecasts for July through December 2022, including the next rainy season. Root zone moisture is critical for long term crop growth. New seedlings are mostly dependent on surface water, but then as plants grow and sink deeper roots, they are sustained by moisture in the top layer of the soil. || ",

This location is about 4 degrees south of the Equator but the rocky peaks near Puncak Jaya (4884 m or 16,020 ft at the highest point) are known to have had extensive glacial ice cover for thousands of years. Excluding the small ice area once found near Ngga Pilimsit, from an initial ice area of ~6.3 km2 in 1980 near the highest peaks east of the vast Grasberg Mine, only about 0.3 km2 of glacial ice remains in these mountains. The imagery series also gives the approximate dates of when specific ice remnants disappeared. This animation varies from the previous (#4932) by flying down to the left side of the storm and only peeling back the layers of volumetric DPR data up to the eye. The camera then flies up to get a straight down bird's eye view of the structure.
