When a speck of comet debris strikes the moon it vaporizes on impact, creating a shock wave in the lunar soil. For a sufficiently large impactor, this shock wave can breach the soil’s dry upper layer and release water molecules from a hydrated layer below. The LADEE spacecraft detects these water molecules as they enter the tenuous lunar atmosphere. || ",

The impacts occurred over a series of about six Earth days which is why Jupiter (which rotates about once every Earth 10 hours) appears to be rotating so fast in this visualization; time is is depicted at about 7 hours per second of animation.The comet fragments shown are: \"a\", \"b\", \"c\", \"d\", \"e\", \"f\", \"g\", \"h\", \"k\", \"l\", \"n\", \"p\", \"p\", \"q\", \"q\", \"r\", \"s\", \"t\", \"u\", \"v\", and \"w\". Several letters were skipped (due to lack of ephemeris) and 2 letters \"p\" and \"q\" appear twice; these are also known as \"p1\", \"p2\", \"q1\", and \"q2\".This visualization was created in support of the Science On a Sphere film called \"LARGEST\" which is about Jupiter.
