            "description": "In a new study published in <a href=\"http://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/agu/journal/10.1002/%28ISSN%291944-8007/\"><i>Geophysical Research Letters</i></a>, lead author Norbert Schorghofer (Institute for Astronomy, University of Hawaii) and six other scientists identify permanently shadowed regions (PSRs) near the north pole of dwarf planet <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ceres_%28dwarf_planet%29\">Ceres</a>, using data gathered by the <a href=\"http://dawn.jpl.nasa.gov/\">Dawn</a> spacecraft.<br><br>Dawn arrived at Ceres in March of 2015. Since then, its Framing Camera (<a href=\"http://dawn.jpl.nasa.gov/technology/fc.html\">FC</a>) instrument has photographed the entire surface of Ceres at resolutions down to 62 meters per pixel. Scientists at the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt, or <a href=\"http://www.dlr.de/dlr/en/desktopdefault.aspx/tabid-10002/\">DLR</a>) have used stereo pairs of FC images to create a global digital terrain map (DTM) of the dwarf planet.<br><br>The authors of the PSR study used the Ceres DTM and a technique called raytracing to find points on the surface of Ceres that never receive direct sunlight. These PSRs are expected to be cold enough to accumulate water ice over long time spans, and future spacecraft visiting Ceres are likely to find fresh water ice there.",

            "title": "LRO Peers into Permanent Shadows",
            "description": "The Moon's permanently shadowed regions, or PSRs, are places on the Moon that haven't seen the Sun in millions, or even billions, of years. The Earth's tilted axis allows sunlight to fall everywhere on its surface, even at the poles, for at least part of the year. But the Moon's tilt relative to the Sun is only 1.6°, not enough to get sunlight into some deep craters near the lunar north and south poles. PSRs are therefore some of the coldest, darkest places in the solar system.Because of that, PSRs are expected to be excellent traps for volatiles, chemicals that would normally vaporize and escape into space, and this includes water. Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) includes several instruments designed to peer into the PSR darkness and measure temperature, reflectivity, and neutron absorption, all of which are clues to what chemicals might be hiding there. This animation shows where the PSRs are and in what ways LRO can see inside them. || ",
