"alt_text": "At NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio we work with many Earth science datasets that must be accurately positioned on a globe. For example, we obtained 30-meter topography data for Greenland along with an ocean and an ice sheet mask from the Greenland Ice Mapping Project at Ohio State. Each of these datasets consists of a 6 x 6 array of 124 megapixel tiles. We also received seven sets of 20-meter Radarsat data from the Canadian Space Agency, mosaicked at the University of Washington's Applied Physics Lab. Each set consist of a 5 x 5 array of 421 megapixel tiles. \n\nWe developed an IDL routine that extracts the coordinate and projection information from geo-tif images and writes out RSL include files that pass the parameters to a projection routine. The projection routine is a C++ Renderman plugin that computes the projection calculations in double precision and accurately positions the related texture tile. Parameters to the projection plugin are passed in string format in order to provide double precision accuracy. We employed this method with the high-resolution Greenland data, accurately mapping 87 gigapixels of data.",

"description": "In NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio we work with many Earth science datasets in different geographic projections that must be accurately positioned on the globe. Defining and mapping these by hand with individual manifold shaders is time-consuming and error prone. We developed an Interactive Data Language routine that automatically extracts the coordinate and projection information from geotif images. For each image, this routine writes out a Renderman Shading Language #include file passing the correct parameters to a projection routine that positions the related texture tile. The projection routine is a C++ Renderman plugin that computes the projection calculations in double precision. String formatted parameters to the projection plugin also allow double precision. We then create a “map-multiple” #include file referencing all the individual #include files in a tile set. This “map-multiple\" file is added to an SLbox in SLIM so that the compiled shader references the appropriate tiles.<br><br>We employed this method with high-resolution data for Greenland. From the Greenland Ice Mapping Project at Ohio State we obtained 30-meter topography data along with an ocean and an ice sheet mask. Each of these datasets consisted of a 6 x 6 array of 124 megapixel tiles. We also received seven sets of 20-meter Radarsat data from the Canadian Space Agency, mosaicked at the University of Washington‘s Applied Physics Lab. Each set consisted of a 5 x 5 array of 421 megapixel tiles.<br><br>Using these tools, we generated 294 #include files to map this data: 108 for the topography data, the ocean and the ice sheet masks, 175 for the Radarsat brightness files and 10 for the “map-mulitple\" files. The final master #include file includes all of the “map-multiple” files. With this method, we accurately mapped over 87 gigapixels of Greenland data.",

"description": "This gallery was created for Earth Science Week 2015 and beyond. It includes a quick start guide for educators and first-hand stories (blogs) for learners of all ages by NASA visualizers, scientists and educators. We hope that your understanding and use of NASA's visualizations will only increase as your appreciation grows for the beauty of the science they portray, and the communicative power they hold. Read all the blogs and find educational resources for all ages at: the Earth Science Week 2015 page.I am a visualizer at NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio. It is my job to combine a variety of data to generate scientific visualizations of changes affecting our planet. I regularly use Earth science datasets from a variety of sources. Some data is from NASA's Distributed Active Archive Centers (the public data centers that store NASA's satellite data.) Data also comes from NASA scientists or scientists at universities or other research institutions. But whether I'm visualizing sea ice in the Arctic and Antarctic, glacier retreat, or seasonal snow cover and fires, the steps needed to handle the data are for all of these are similar.Data comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes. For example, a dataset for the same geographic region may be in different geographic projections. Or the same data may have been collected and processed at different resolutions. I put these datasets together to show them in layers. I need to handle the data in such a way that they correctly overlay one on to another. For example, I would not want our topography data showing the terrain around a mountain lake to be shifted or misregistered from the image data showing the blue region covered by the water. That would obviously be wrong! We use software that follows the exact mathematical rules defined for each type of projection. We can then align the geographic features of multiple datasets, transforming all of the datasets so that they accurate match one another. || ",
