The orbit is elliptical, with a closest approach, called periapsis, within 20 kilometers of the surface. The far end of the orbit (apoapsis) is roughly 165 kilometers above the north pole. The new orbit is relatively stable, requiring little fuel to maintain.

The illustration shows LRO flying over the terrain of the south pole. The terrain is a visualization that uses digital elevation maps from LRO's laser altimeter.", "items": [], "extra_data": {} }, { "id": 337814, "url": "https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/4289/#media_group_337814", "widget": "Basic text", "title": "For More Information", "caption": "", "description": "See [Web Feature](http://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/nasas-lro-moves-closer-to-the-lunar-surface)", "items": [], "extra_data": {} } ], "studio": "SVS", "funding_sources": [ "LRO" ], "credits": [ { "role": "Visualizer", "people": [ { "name": "Ernie Wright", "employer": "USRA" } ] }, { "role": "Artist", "people": [ { "name": "Chris Meaney", "employer": "HTSI" } ] } ], "missions": [ "LRO (Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter)" ], "series": [ "The Moon" ], "tapes": [], "papers": [], "datasets": [ { "name": "Digital Elevation Map", "common_name": "DEM", "platform": "LRO", "sensor": "LOLA", "type": "Other", "organizations": [], "description": "", "credit": "", "url": "", "date_range": null } ], "nasa_science_categories": [ "Planets & Moons" ], "keywords": [ "LRO", "Lunar Poles", "Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter", "Moon", "Orbit" ], "recommended_pages": [], "related": [], "sources": [], "products": [], "newer_versions": [], "older_versions": [], "alternate_versions": [] }
