Her topic is geodesy, the study of Earth, its shape, and where exactly we are in space and time. One of the most familiar parts of the global geodetic infrastructure are the Global Navigation Satellite Systems satellites, of which GPS is one example. Geodesy enables many applications, including the map programs on your smartphone. But, NASA’s geodesy research and infrastructure does far more for both science and society. For example, it provides essential data for flight controllers and scientists to precisely determine satellite orbits and to register Earth observations collected by those satellites with their ground locations. Dr. St. Germain further delves into the importance of geodesy for future Earth science missions.
