Each commercial lander will carry NASA-provided payloads that will conduct science investigations and demonstrate advanced technologies on the lunar surface, paving the way for NASA astronauts to land on the lunar surface by 2024.<br><br>As part of their submissions, each partner proposed flying specific NASA instruments to the lunar surface. By the end of the summer, NASA will determine which payloads will fly on each flight. The potential payloads include instruments that will conduct new lunar science, pinpoint lander position, measure the lunar radiation environment, assess how lander and astronaut activity affects the Moon, and assist with navigation precision, among other capabilities.<br><br>The selections are:<br><br><b>Astrobotic of Pittsburgh</b>has been awarded $79.5 million and has proposed to fly as many as 14 payloads to Lacus Mortis, a large crater on the near side of the Moon, by July 2021.<br><br><b>Intuitive Machines of Houston</b> has been awarded $77 million. The company has proposed to fly as many as five payloads to Oceanus Procellarum, a scientifically intriguing dark spot on the Moon, by July 2021.<br><br><b>Orbit Beyond of Edison, New Jersey</b>, has been awarded $97 million and has proposed to fly as many as four payloads to Mare Imbrium, a lava plain in one of the Moon’s craters, by September 2020.<br><br><br>The teleconference audio will stream live at:<a href=\"https://www.nasa.gov/live\" target=\"_blank\"> HERE</a><br><br>For more information about NASA’s Moon to Mars exploration plans:<a href=\"https://www.nasa.gov/moontomars\" target=\"_blank\"> CLICK HERE</a>",

"description": "We are going forward to the Moon by 2024, but did you know that back in 2005, Dr. Jim Garvin and his team of scientists pointed the Hubble Space Telescope at our nearest celestial neighbor for a very important reason? The Hubble team used the telescope’s powerful instruments to work as a prospector for the Moon’s surface, searching for resources that would help future human-led missions mine and utilize those materials to “live off the land” of the Moon. Hubble’s lunar research led the way for future missions, such as the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, helping men and women to go forward to the Moon by 2024!For more information, visit https://nasa.gov/hubble.Credit: NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center/Paul Morris.Music credits: \"Tracer\" by Max Cameron Concors [ASCAP]; Killer Tracks Production Music. “Insights” by Axel Coon [GEMA], Ralf Goebel [GEMA] Killer Tracks Production Music. “Transitions” by Ben Niblett [PRS], Jon Cotton [PRS] Killer Tracks Production Music. “Interstellar Spacecraft” by JC Lemay [SACEM] Killer Tracks Production Music. || ",

"description": "The walls within some craters at the moon's poles have gone without sunlight for as long as two billion years. Known as permanently shadowed regions, these craters lie almost perpendicular to the sun, never receiving its warmth or light. By bouncing laser beams off the moon's surface, NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) mapped the shape and elevation of these incredibly dark areas. Detailed 3-D models constructed from the data, combined with data collected by other instruments aboard the spacecraft, reveal which craters are fully hidden from the sun's rays, and which crater floors are cold enough for chemicals such as water to build up in the lunar soil. "title": "LRO Peers into Permanent Shadows",
"description": "The Moon's permanently shadowed regions, or PSRs, are places on the Moon that haven't seen the Sun in millions, or even billions, of years. The Earth's tilted axis allows sunlight to fall everywhere on its surface, even at the poles, for at least part of the year. But the Moon's tilt relative to the Sun is only 1.6°, not enough to get sunlight into some deep craters near the lunar north and south poles. PSRs are therefore some of the coldest, darkest places in the solar system.Because of that, PSRs are expected to be excellent traps for volatiles, chemicals that would normally vaporize and escape into space, and this includes water. Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) includes several instruments designed to peer into the PSR darkness and measure temperature, reflectivity, and neutron absorption, all of which are clues to what chemicals might be hiding there. This animation shows where the PSRs are and in what ways LRO can see inside them. || ",
