Rotating solar sphere made from a combination of imagery from the two STEREO spacecraft, together with simultaneous data from the Solar Dynamic Observatory. This movie is made from data taken on January 31, 2011. STEREO is able to take images like this once every ten minutes.  Because the STEREO separation was still slightly less than 180 degrees at that time, the small gap on the far side of the Sun has been interpolated over to simulate the full 360 degree view that STEREO will see.  This gap will start to disappear on February 6, 2011, and will completely disappear over the next several days. The regions near the seam between the STEREO Ahead and Behind images appear stretched out because they are at the edges of the Sun in the original images. As the STEREO spacecraft continue to move further around to the farside of the sun, imaging in this part of the globe will improve. What would happen if everyone invested in improving internal communications at Goddard?  How would our work be enhanced?  What if everyone felt comfortable communicating with leaders and everyone felt equally valued?  What if an event was designed to explore effective and not-so-effective communications on Center? Bold questions like these grew out of lively conversations at the Center's first-ever World Cafe.On this day, the project team for ACT - the Advancing Communication Techniques - welcomed guests from nearly every Directorate. The familiar Goddard Library was now transformed into a sidewalk cafe, emanating several simple and casual gatherings.Trained facilitators guided the participants to share their experiences related to internal communications at Goddard, the structure of communication, and brainstormed ways to improve these scenarios.  Three hours flew by and ideas generated at the Cafe are now being examined for future Center-wide endeavors to improve the way we communicate to one another.What is possible in internal communications? This compilation of video shows some of the first imagery and data sent back from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). Most of the imagery comes from SDO's AIA instrument, and different colors are used to represent different temperatures, a common technique for observing solar features. SDO sees the entire disk of the Sun in extremely high spacial and temporal resolution and this allows scientists to zoom in on notable events like flares, waves, and sunspots. Satellite imagery of the 2011 flooding along the Mississippi River compared with imagery from 2010.  Shows high resolution images from Landsat 5 of Cairo, Illinois, and Memphis, Tennessee.   To prevent flooding in Cairo, Illinois, the US Army Corps of Engineers blasted a two-mile hole in the levee to let the waters flow into the New Madrid Floodway.  Near Memphis Tennessee, flood waters crested at 48 feet, only inches below the record high level of the 1937 floods.  No narration, just music.   10773   Mississippi Flooding 2011
A survey of barrier islands published in 2011 in the Journal of Coastal Research offers the most thorough assessment to date of the thousands of small islands that hug the coasts of the world's landmasses. The study, led by Matthew Stutz of Meredith College and Orrin Pilkey of Duke University, raises new questions about how the unique islands form and evolve over time - and how they may fare as the climate changes and sea level rises. It was based on a global collection of satellite images as well as information from topographic and navigational charts.
