Global Permafrost Layers designed for Science on a Sphere (SOS) and WMS

Permafrost is permanently frozen ground that remains at or below 0°C for at least two years. The circumpolar permafrost and ground ice data depicts the distribution of permafrost and ground ice in the Northern Hemisphere and shows continuous, discontinuous, sporadic, and isolated permafrost boundaries.

In this image, the lightness of the color is used to designate different regions of permafrost over a transparent background. The four colors represent the following: sporadic permafrost (lightest color), isolated permafrost (2nd lightest color), discondinuous permafrost (2nd darkest color) and continuous permafrost (darkest color).    In this image, the lightness of the color is used to designate different regions of permafrost over a transparent background.
